A Message from HACA’s Executive Director

Throughout most of 2020, and now a significant part of 2021, we have been consumed with disruptions in our lives because of COVID-19.  Last year, we put our hopes on the swift development of a vaccine that would put a stop to the spread of this new deadly disease.  This year, our hopes have been realized.

In March and April, HACA sponsored vaccine clinics at our Nidus and Dyer senior communities in Union City.   Many elderly residents, their caregivers, and HACA staff took advantage of the opportunity to be inoculated. The COVID-19 vaccine is now widely available to adults and youth over the age of 16.

The vaccine is safe and is working.  Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are at their lowest levels since the pandemic began.  Similarly, deaths due to the virus have decreased dramatically in Alameda County and elsewhere since March with widespread availability of highly effective vaccines.  The light at the end of the tunnel that we have all been hoping for is finally becoming brighter.

Even so, many people are choosing not to receive the vaccine.  I recognize it’s a personal choice.   However, if we are to return to the “normal” that was part of our lives prior to March 2020, it’s crucial that the number of vaccinated people increase.  Lives depend on it, as does our preferred way of life.

To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine in Alameda County and to register online to receive notifications when locations near you have available vaccines go to https://covid-19.acgov.org/vaccines.

I urge you to stay well and think of others.
